Carding refers to a gunsmithing process using a fine wire brush or low-velocity fine wire wheel to remove rust (oxidation) from metal.

Either the Brownell's carding brush or carding wheel will remove a fine layer of rust when ‘rust bluing’ metal. The brush has a compact head for seeure control and soft bristles that won't scratch through caustic blued finishes. The wheel functions at maximum of 3500 RPM without removing metal or leaving a 'satin' look.
Naturally, a carding wheel makes for a faster process but minimal pressure/speed should be used to ensure you don’t remove more residue than desirable. Take care not to use a wheel that is too coarse. It's better to use a finer grade even it the carding takes a bit longer. For example, .006” may be too harsh / aggressive on even the hardest metal.
CAUTION: Use a seporate wheel for each metal to avoid the transfer of metal bits that can cause spots or discoloration in bluing baths.
